Answers to Inspectors’ Most Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can an ATFS Inspecting Forester help ensure that a Tree Farmer’s conformance to the Standards with their reforestation/afforestation efforts?

A: Standard Indicator 3.1.1 states: Harvested forest land shall achieve adequate stocking of desired species reflecting the landowner’s objectives, within five years after harvest, or within a time interval as specified by applicable regulation.

In order to demonstrate conformance with this Standard, an Inspecting Forester should document any relevant information related to the Tree Farmer’s regeneration efforts, such as a review of stocking surveys or insights from a walkthrough of the property. These notes also serve as a record of conformance in the event conditions change on the ground, such as from excessive browse or a natural disaster.
