The West Virginia Division of History and Culture (http://www.wvculture.org/) preserves and promotes the state’s cultural heritage.  Programs of interest include:

Historic Preservation (http://www.wvculture.org/shpo/shpoindex.aspx) – provides assistance in identifying and protecting historic properties, archaeological sites, burial places, and other cultural sites in the state.  The division maintains files of documented historic and cultural resources in the state and should be contacted regarding access.

Archives and History (http://www.wvculture.org/history/archivesindex.aspx) – identifies, preserves, and makes accessible records (such as census records, military records, family histories, and various county, state and federal records) and other documents that can help you research your special sites.
