Virginia Department of Historic Resources (http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/) – provides assistance in identifying and protecting historic properties, archaeological sites, burial places, and other cultural sites in the state.  The Department maintains the Data Sharing System, a database of the state’s documented historic and cultural resources.  A license must be obtained to access the system.

Virginia Historical Society (http://www.vahistorical.org/) and Library of Virginia (http://www.lva.virginia.gov/) – identify, preserve, and make accessible records (such as census records, military records, family histories, and various county, state and federal records) and other documents that can help you research your special sites. 

Preserving the Past for the Future: An Introduction to Site Stewardship (http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/arch_DHR/steward.htm) – the Virginia Department of Historic Resources guide to archaeological sites and stewardship of cultural resources.
