Innovations to Support Family Forest Owners

The LMP Process

  1. Before meeting with a landowner, a forester will review the LMP, getting the latest data on the region’s forest types, ecosystem data, species of concern, spatial layer data, and more.
  2. The forester meets with the landowner to better understand details around the landowner’s forest, the landowner’s goals and objectives for their forest, and any unique features that should be considered.
  3. Drawing from the LMP, the forester provides the landowner with a clear and concise plan of action. Like a traditional forest management plan, the landscape plan outlines steps to accomplish goals and objectives, as well as detailed information about forest types, soils, species, and more.
  4. A relationship with the forester is established. The landowner can now act on the forest management guidance given in the action plan, seeking further advice from the forester as needed.
  5. If appropriate and desired, the forester and landowner can proceed with an ATFS inspection and eventual certification or apply for the U.S. Forest Service Forest Stewardship Program.
