Heritage Tree Farm Program

September 1, 2004 at 4:27 PM by certification

The Heritage Tree Farm Program, has been fully implemented into the American Tree Farm System. This program was developed to recognize industrial forestlands which participate in ATFS. The forest industry has been a historically valued and supportive element of Tree Farm; however, certifying industrial forestlands requires an approach and rigor not appropriate for most family forestlands. With the focus of the Tree Farm Program being family forestlands, it seems logical to separate the industrial forestlands and family forestlands within ATFS. The recently created Heritage Tree Farm Program serves to recognize industrial properties previously inspected by and part of ATFS. These properties will no longer be inspected or certified by ATFS, but rather, will continue to play a valuable role as Heritage Tree Farms. The Heritage program is comprised of all industrial properties within ATFS that are also third-party certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative“ (SFI).The annual reinspection reports will not include reinspection forms for Heritage Tree Farms, as these properties will not require reinspection. A Heritage Tree Farm Sign is available, at cost, through the national office.
