Walk in Woods Day, May 21, 2011
The American Tree Farm System is calling for everyone to celebrate National Walk in the Woods Day on Saturday, May 21, 2011 by getting outside.
National Walk in the Woods Day was proclaimed by the American Forest Foundation to celebrate the year-long International Year of Forests.
Designated by the United Nations General Assembly, 2011 International Year of Forests is designed to raise awareness of sustainable forest management and forest conservation.
We're having a blast celebrating all year—check out our Flickr stream from the March 30 reception in Washington, D.C. featuring Tree Farmer Chuck Leavell of Charlene Plantation in Georgia.
How you can celebrate National Walk in the Woods Day?
- Discover a forest! No matter where you live, you don’t have to go far. Whether it's a city or state park, a private woodland, or a national park, take a walk in the woods. For some fun and informal educational ideas, check out these family activities from Project Learning Tree.
-
Are you a family forest landowner? You
may consider participating in, or
leading, a National Walk in the Woods Day activity. Here are some
ideas:
- Invite your family, neighbors, elected officials, or other members of your community to join you for a walk on your Tree Farm.
- Take your children, grandchildren, or neighbors’ children out exploring on your Tree Farm. The American Tree Farm System and Project Learning Tree have put together a collection of activities for you to try on May 21.
- Invite a local youth or after-school club to visit your Tree Farm.
- Visit www.treefarmsystem.org/walkinthewoods for additional resources and a toolkit to help plan your May 21 walk in the woods.
- Help a school improve its grounds by planting trees with students and their teacher.
- Go camping, or simply step outside and enjoy your neighborhood's trees.
Make plans now to celebrate National Walk in the Woods Day!
