Throughout the 2018 program assessment and National Leadership Conference, ATFS leaders and volunteers made it clear that increasing the capacity of state programs and improving communications are two key ways we can work together to strengthen, grow and increase the impact of the ATFS program.

One of the most important investments we have made thus far is bringing on additional staff capacity to support state programs. This month, we invite you to get to know Angela Wells, Western Tree Farm Manager.

We asked Angela to share her personal connection to ATFS and why she’s so passionate about helping family forest owners through the American Tree Farm System.

2019 Fly-In: Advocating for Healthy Forests
Last month more than 50 Tree Farmers, partners, and forestry professionals travelled to Washington, D.C. to meet with their representatives to discuss the importance of policy in support of forest management. Issues such as effective implementation of programs from the 2018 Farm Bill, disaster recovery, and timber markets were all brought up to representatives. Without the help of advocacy leaders, strong policies for family woodland owners and forest conservation would not be possible.

Woodland Magazine
The Spring 2019 issue of Woodland magazine is out! In this issue, you'll meet stewards of family forests and learn how they work tirelessly to protect our nation's woodlands. You’ll also learn about the work being done with the help of partners in California to create new markets for landowners and reduce the risk of wildfires. Plus, we’ll also give you more details about how the 2018 Farm Bill will affect family forest owners and forest management across the country.

Q. When does a Tree Farmer receive a new landowner certificate? How can a landowner get a new certificate?
A: All new Tree Farmers enrolled in either the certified or recognition category will receive a welcome packet with a certificate in the mail. This process of mailing welcome packets occurs monthly, but your state committee may also choose to send out your own welcome packet. A certificate can be reprinted at any time for a landowner through the ATFS database. This can be helpful if the landowner needs additional copies of the certificate, misplaces their copy, etc.

2019 Grant Requests Due June 16
The American Forest Foundation (AFF) is now accepting requests for Outcome-Based Grants (OBG) from American Tree Farm System (ATFS) state committees. Requests are due by June 16, 2019.

AFF has identified several important outcomes to focus funding for 2019:

  • The average time for ATFS landowner enrollment (from initial inspector assignment to final inspection approval) will be reduced.
  • The number of Tree Farms enrolled in ATFS will increase.
  • The number of inspectors who are completing at least one inspection per year will increase.
  • New ideas and activities around inspector appreciation and building value for inspectors will be tested and implemented.
  • Targeted outreach to help landowners prepare for and/or respond to hardship (such as natural disaster) will increase.
  • Collaboration with state-level Project Learning Tree partners will increase.
  • Quality and accuracy of the landowner, Tree Farm, and/or inspector information in the ATFS Database will be improved.

For questions or for more information, please contact your ATFS Regional Manager, Sara Anrrich, or visit our website.

ATFS Requesting Spatial Data
In recent years, the ATFS program has been facilitating the collection of Tree Farm spatial data through grants and tools to simplify landowner outreach and data updates. The ATFS database is gaining spatial capabilities that will allow users to input Tree Farm boundary data. Nephtali is currently looking to work with a few committees to import any existing shape files into the ATFS database and for volunteers to test out the new functionalities before it goes live.

We are hoping to have the tool released to everyone this summer. If your committee is interested in importing existing spatial data or doing some beta testing, please get in touch with Nephtali Chavez.
If your committee is interested in beginning the process of gathering spatial boundary data for Tree Farms, AFF can help through our outcome-based grants. More information about the grants can be found here: https://www.treefarmsystem.org/leadersonly-grants
