The Tree Farm Program's mission is to give forest owners the tools they need to keep their forests healthy and productive. The Montana Tree Farm System includes non-industrial private forest owners, community forests, professional foresters, forest industry representatives, and staff from state and federal agencies.

In Montana

  1. There are over 600 Tree Farms covering more than 237,000 acres of forest land.
  2. Non-industrial private land accounts for 23% of Montana's forested area, covering 4.6 million acres.
  3. From 2010 to 2014, an average of 78 million board feet of timber was harvested annually from non-industrial private forest land.
  4. Montana Tree Farms conserve important endangered species habitat, protect municipal water supplies, and provide recreational opportunities.

In the United States

  1. There are 9.9 million private ownerships with 390 million acres of forest land, which represents nearly 60% of all forested land in the USA.
  2. Tree Farms promote public support and understanding of sustainable forestry by displaying Tree Farm signs, hosting educational programs, engaging in public advocacy, and creating a living example of conservation on working lands.
