Piney Woods Tree Farm – Mississippi

The Powe's Mississippi's Piney Woods is home to a 1,500 acre Tree Farm owned by the Powe's, Charles and his sister, Emma Jean Powe-McKee. Their mother, Lillian, currently lives on the property with Emma and her husband. In 1984, the Powe's began working with a forester to develop a management plan. The first year, they planted 130 acres of loblolly pine. Each year, they make small sales of hardwood and mixed pine and replant with pine. In 2001, Charles Powe was named Wayne County Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year.

The Powe's family legend includes the friendship of Alexander Powe, Charles' great-great grandfather and Choctaw Indian chief, Pushmataha in the early 1800s. Their friendship may have averted a 19th century war. Pushmataha stood up against the Shawnee Indian chief Tecumseh when Tecumseh wanted to fight the settlers because Powe had always treated Pushmataha with respect and thought of him and his family as neighbors and friends.
