Outstanding Tree Farmers – 1999

Chuck & Rose Lane Leavell
Georgia

Chuck Leavell remembers the day he got the wake up call for Tree Farming and the result is a sustainably managed Tree Farm named Charlane Plantation. Churck recalls, "I set out to learn all that I could. The next thing I knew, I had this incredible passion for forests – a new vocation that has changed my life."

Charlane Plantation combines the names and energies of Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell. Deeded the property upon the death of Rose Lane's grandmother, the 2,200 acre property is located in Twiggs County. With more than 1,700 acres of trees and private hunting land, a restored 1850s farmhouse, a 1.5-mile nature trail and wildlife habitat, Charlane is a living example of sustainability through generations.

The trail and land provide outdoor forestry classroom experiences for students, youth groups and adults. The forests provide a backdrop to numerous recreational activities, hunting and field trails, and a horse and stable operation.

Chuck is also an award winning, accomplished keyboard player who is currently on tour with The Rolling Stones. As he travels around the world, his message is simple. "Use the forests wisely. Don't abuse them. "
