Future Generations: Youth Program

Future Generations: Youth Program

We know that providing the tools and aptitude for the next generation to build on your legacy is one of the most important things you can do.

With that in mind, the 2013 Tree Farm Convention’s “Future Generations: Youth Program”, designed for ages 7-12, promises to be one of our best yet.  This program is both time-tested and innovative.  We combine family-friendly Tree Farm Convention activities with special youth focused curriculum from the award-winning Project Learning Tree program.   These tested, playful, hands-on activities are a fun way for children and “tweens” to learn about leadership skills, environmental audits, and resource management that support both wildlife and ways of life.

Thursday, youth will be with their families during the Convention Kick-off activities.

Friday morning, the youth will attend three sessions that run concurrently with the adult program using the Project Learning Tree curriculum. That afternoon, youth can lunch with their families and other Convention registrants in the general session ballroom.  Afterwards, we’ll have buses waiting to take all youth program participants to the renowned Bell Museum of Natural History.  At the Museum, they will enjoy a guided Discovery tour and explore the museum's habitat dioramas, coming face to face with a giant moose, a pack of timber wolves, and the unique habitats deep forest, wide open prairie and the shores of one of the planet’s largest freshwater bodies – Lake Superior.  Next up, another great guided tour:  “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil,” an acclaimed Smithsonian Institution exhibition filled with multimedia programs, interactive models, visuals and real soil monoliths.

Saturday’s Annual Saturday field day will be an ideal outing for youth and their families.  A youth-run station will continue the curriculum from the day before, so youths can show off their smarts!   They will become the instructors, staffing the station and running the lessons, and bringing their knowledge back to their families.

Our Future Generations: Youth programming will culminate with a special youth reception and banquet on Saturday evening.  Youth will get to create and manage an imaginary Tree Farm, and then enjoy dinner and a fun, age-appropriate movie.

This will be an outstanding, one-of-a-kind opportunity for you and your family to experience and learn special things about how to build your Tree Farm legacy together.  We hope to see you there!
