Shared Streams – West Fork Evans Creek, Oregon

During 1998 Oregon developed a Coastal Salmon Restoration Initiative that identified the West Fork Evans Creek as a priority stream with "stronghold" populations of native coho salmon and steelhead. In response, the Silver Butte Timber Company and C&D Lumber joined the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Middle Rogue Steelhead Chapter of TU and ATFS to conduct a voluntary riparian improvement project that addresses factors limiting coho production and trout habitat on the West Fork Evan Creek. The Shared Streams project involved the placement of instream habitat structures designed to increase winter rearing habitat for juvenile salmonids, which has been shown to increase the increase the overwintering survival of these fish. The project is part of an ongoing effort to restore habitat for coho salmon and steelhead, compliment habitat work conducted by the ODFW in 1993 and 1994 on another section of the creek and is consistent with Oregons Coastal Salmon Restoration Initiative.
