Shared Streams – West Branch of the Delaware River, New York

The John A. Lennox Memorial Forest, a certified Tree Farm and 4-H camp, is the first forestland site designated as a New York City Watershed Demonstration Project. The Lennox Memorial forest is unique because it encompasses an entire small, sub-watershed of the West Branch of the Delaware River, one of the nation's top wild trout rivers and a drinking water supply for New York City.

A Shared Streams coalition was formed to improve water quality through landowner and youth education. This flagship project brings together Trout Unlimited's (TU) Upper Susquehanna chapter, American Tree Farm System (ATFS) volunteer foresters, 4-H educators, Cornell University and Southern University of New York Cooperative Extension agents, and representatives from local, state, and federal agencies, and the City of New York.

Shared Streams will improve the river segment bordering the demonstration forest by following Best Management Practices and watershed protection strategies. Volunteers from the Upper Susquehana chapter of Trout Unlimited constructed and educational kiosk that explains how clean water, wild trout, and healthy forests are intertwined.

A demonstration field day sponsored by Philip Morris Co. Inc. was held on the forest in June of 2000. It was the first big trial run for the Lennox Forest as an educational site for a broad audience. The site proved to be ideal and a good time was had by all.
