This half-day tour will provide a snapshot of tree farming west of the Cascade Range. Located in rolling hills 25 miles southeast of Portland, the Hopkins Demonstration Forest is an actively managed tree farm that depicts family forestland timber types and management strategies in the Pacific Northwest.
On this 140-acre property, you’ll see 25 different forest types with a different management regimen for each to provide an array of forest products and values. Managed by a local board of foresters and landowners, this demonstration forest is used for applied research, tree farmer tours and public education.
The Hopkins Demonstration Forest was created in 1990 when Margaret Hopkins donated her family’s tree farm to the non-profit organization, Forests Forever, Inc. It was her dream to create a place where a variety of visitors, including students and teachers, woodland owners, professional foresters and the public, could learn about Oregon’s forests, forest management, and the important role of family forests and forest owners in the region’s economy. Requires moderate walking. Limited to 55 participants. |
