Shared Streams
Salmon Trout River, Michigan
In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Salmon Trout River and its tributaries provide spawning and nursery grounds for one of the last known populations of native "coaster" brook trout living in mainland waters of the Great Lakes. A 1998 assessment determined that water quality in the river was good but land use patterns have caused extensive erosion and the collapse of sandbanks, resulting in sedimentation and sand loading of the stream system.
Partners included certified Tree Farmers, Trout Unlimited (TU) chapters, the Huron Mountain Club, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The Michigan DNR documented roads and agricultural and business uses of the land, and inventoried the aquatic resources.
