Shared Streams in Maine –Kenduskeag Stream

The Kenduskeag Stream is a 60-mile long tributary of the Penobscot River. The Kenduskeag was historically a very important producer of Atlantic salmon within the Penobscot watershed, and continues to support large numbers of juvenile salmon. Fisheries biologists from Trout Unlimited, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service have identified this site as a high priority for habitat restoration. This project was chosen to address another key land management issue for Atlantic salmon habitat – the impact of livestock in riparian areas.

This project will fence livestock out of the river, provide an alternative watering source, reshape and seed the eroding gully, and restore streamside vegetation including trees.

Project partners in the project include the National Marine and Fisheries Service, the Sunkhaze Stream TU Chapter, Maine Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission.

The Kenduskeag Project is being made possible by a Trout Unlimited Embrace A Stream grant and a matching grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
