Shared StreamsTM is a Habitat Conservation program that links members of the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) with conservation groups and public agencies to improve and restore fish habitat on family forestlands. Good forest management is crucial to maintaining water quality - for fish that depend on streams and for drinking water. By raising the awareness of forest landowners, Shared Streams outreach and education sustains habitat for fish and other riparian-habitat-dependent wildlife species.

In 1996, the first Shared Streams conservation partnership was formed with Trout Unlimited (TU) to plan, develop and implement projects in Michigan, Wisconsin, and New York . Each project fostered sound forestry, fishery and watershed management practices among family forest landowners. Since then Shared Streams has gained extensive support from local conservation and recreation organizations, university Extension offices, industry, government agencies, and forestland owners. Our partners show a substantial commitment to the Shared Streams' cooperative, voluntary approach to address conservation issues.

Starting in 2000, the Shared Streams in Maine initiative focused efforts on four projects to improve Maine Atlantic salmon habitat and raise landowner awareness and participation in conservation efforts. The initiative received the Natural Resources Council of America (NRCA) Partnership Award in 2002 and a National Arbor Day Foundation Project Award in 2003.

Currently, Shared Streams is developing partnerships and seeking support for projects in Colorado linking forest management, wildfire, and water quality. Seeking to duplicate the success of Shared Streams in Maine, Shared Streams is looking for new opportunities to focus efforts and address habitat issues in other regions as well.
