Pioneer Tree Farmer

Pioneer Tree Farm status is the beginning level of tree farming. This program establishes communication with non-managing landowners to motivate them to work toward ATFS certification by implementing excellent forestry on their woodlands. Pioneer Tree Farm status is granted to allow interested landowners that are not quite ready for certification to become an ATFS member.

National Requirements for Pioneer Tree Farm Eligibility

  • A copy of the Pioneer/Certified Tree Farm Inspection Record (004 Form) with the Tree Farm/Forest Management Plan Recommendations section (next five years) completed by a qualified Tree Farm inspector.

  • Although not required, a Pioneer Tree Farmer may have written forest management plan. However, a landowner without a written plan is exempt from Tree Farm Certified status.

  • Signatures on the management plan of the landowner and the inspecting forester are required and indicate joint approval.

  • Pioneer Tree Farmers must meet certified standards within five years or become de-certified. A property cannot remain in Pioneer status longer than five years.

Benefits of Pioneer Tree Farm Status
  • Free professional advice from a forester during an initial inspection.
  • Invitations to seminars, field days and workshops that can help you achieve the goals you have set for your Tree Farm.
  • Local, state and national information on legislation and other issues affecting forest landowners.
  • An annual convention where you can meet, share experiences and enjoy the fellowship of Tree Farmers from across the country.
  • A complimentary issue to Tree Farmer, the Guide to Sustaining America's Family Forests magazine, the bi-monthly forest enhancement publication by Tree Farmers for Free Farmers.
