ATFS Webinar Series

Welcome to the American Tree Farm System webinar series.  ATFS knows that its members take their forest heritage seriously and we work to provide you with the tools you need to keep your forests healthy, productive and enjoyable. 

All of our upcoming webinars are located in the box below, which includes a description of the webinar and the speaker as well as the registration link.  To participate in an upcoming webinar, please follow the registration link and complete the registration form.  After you register you will receive a confirmation email that will include the call in number and weblink that you can use to participate in the webinar on the designate day.  To participate in our webinars, you will need a phone line to call our 1-866 number to hear the audio portion of the webinar and you will also need a computer with an internet connection to view the powerpoint slides.

Timber Tax Basis

Properly and timely setting up your timber basis is an important step in saving taxes, time, and hassle.

Both tax webinars will be presented by Linda Wang and John Greene

Linda Wang is National Timber Tax Specialist with USDA Forest Service in Washington D.C. She is the author for the lastest edition of Federal Income Tax on Timber, A Key to Your Most Frequently Asked Questions, a timber tax publication.  She is the co-author of the annual Tax Tips for the Forest Landowners article. She has a Ph.D. in Forest Economics and a CPA certificate in Washington State.

John Greene is a Research Forester at the USDA Southern Research Station in North Carolina. He is the co-author for Forest Landowner's Guide to the Federal Income Tax, Estate Planning for Forest Landowners, and co-author of the annual Tax Tips for the Forest Landowners. He holds a Ph.D. in Forest Economics.

Presenters

Dr. Mel Baughman is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Forest Resources at the University of Minnesota.  He has a B.S. degree in forestry, an M.S. in forest recreation, and a Ph.D. in forest policy.  Mel has 37years of extension experience developing educational materials for family forest owners and the natural resource professionals that serve these owners.  Among these materials are publications and slide sets on walnut management and oak management.  In recent years he has taught mainly income and property tax regulations and recreational trail design. The quality of his work is reflected in the numerous state and national awards he has received. 

Lenny Farlee is an extension forester with the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center, Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. Lenny graduated with a B.S. in Forest and Wildlife Management in 1985, and a M.S. in Silviculture in 1991, both from Purdue University. He worked with the Indiana Division of Forestry at Vallonia State Tree Nursery then as a district forester for the Indiana Division of Forestry.  In 2007, Lenny joined the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources as the extension forester for the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center. Lenny provides programs and publications in a variety of media directed toward improving the regeneration and sustainable management of high quality hardwood trees and forests in the Central Hardwood Region.
